At a government meeting, Deputy Chairman of “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” Marat Shakenov announced the introduction of new technologies. On the “Karagaily – Kokpekty” section, the digital train traffic management system “AIMAK RAIL” has already been implemented.
Since December, work has been underway to deploy Starlink along 247 kilometers. This will increase capacity: up to 4 train pairs per day at the first stage, and up to 7 at the second.
The digital interval regulation system manages train spacing not by traditional signals but through real‑time data. Starlink ensures stable communication even in remote areas without infrastructure.
Freight volumes are expected to grow to 3 million tons annually at the first stage and over 5 million at the second. Test runs are scheduled for April.
Minister of AI and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiev noted that Kazakhstan currently has three satellite internet operators — Starlink, OneWeb, and KazSat — with two more foreign companies entering soon.
Some experts warn that reliance on Starlink for critical infrastructure may be risky: if service stops for technical or political reasons, railway operations could slow or halt.
Previously, KTZ Chairman Anuar Akhmetzhanov highlighted positive assessments of Starlink’s speed. Passengers already use high‑speed internet on the “Astana – Borovoe” route, and Talgo trains on “Astana – Almaty” and “Astana – Ust‑Kamenogorsk” have tested OneWeb connections.
