The messenger announced a new feature — accounts for children under 13, managed by parents. The system lets adults create and oversee their kids’ accounts, control contacts and privacy settings. Teens can use WhatsApp, but key parameters are set by parents, reducing risks of unwanted communication.

The company stresses that the initiative balances access to digital services with safety. Experts note it could become a model for other platforms.

Globally, restrictions on children’s access to online services are spreading: Australia banned social media for under‑16s, similar laws are discussed in the EU, US, Canada and Kazakhstan. Yet debates around age verification remain unresolved — neither its effectiveness nor harm is proven.

Thus, WhatsApp offers its own child‑protection solution, while governments continue to seek balance between safety and rights.
