Work on infrastructure preparation for the non-geostationary communication network OneWeb is almost complete. This information was released during a meeting of the board of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry.
“On the territory of the Kokterek space communications center, work is being completed to create an interface station for the non-geostationary communication network OneWeb. Technical readiness for the provision of commercial services is scheduled for 2024,” the ministry said in a statement.
OneWeb satellite communications, among other things, will help solve the problem of connecting 328 villages to the Internet in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Work in this direction is being carried out within the framework of a memorandum of cooperation that the Kazakh authorities signed with OneWeb in 2021.
It was also planned to open a OneWeb technical center in the country to provide high-speed Internet to residents of Central Asian countries. The possibility of assembling components for OneWeb satellites at the spacecraft assembly and testing complex in Astana was considered.
OneWeb is an interconnected system of satellites of the corporation of the same name. It will be possible to connect a smartphone, tablet and laptop to satellites through a user terminal, which consists of a satellite dish, receiver and communication unit.
But at the same time, ICRIAP did not specify whether there would be a fine, as in the case of Starlink, for using satellite communications for personal purposes. Let us recall that the bill, which also concerns the legalization of satellite Internet from Elon Musk, was considered by the Mazhilis in the first reading in January of this year.
