The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan has initiated amendments regulating the storage periods for patients' personal medical data.

The draft document has been posted on the Open NPA portal and will be discussed until February 14, 2025.

The draft provides for the following storage periods for personal data and accompanying medical information obtained by a health worker using diagnostic equipment:

- adults (15 years and older) – 10 years;
- children (0 to 15 years) – 15 years.

During this period, audio recordings, biomagnetic images, computed tomography, color Doppler mapping, X-rays, and ECGs will be stored.

This storage list also includes the results of endoscopy, intravascular ultrasound, oral X-rays, MRI, ultrasound, sonograms, video photographs, video microscopic, video endoscopic images, and other medical data.

The document sets out key requirements:

- Personal medical data will be stored in accordance with the National Standard ST RK ISO 12052-2021 (DICOM).

All data is recorded with a unique patient identification number.

After the expiration of the terms, personal medical data is subject to deletion.

The new rules should simplify the accounting of medical data and improve the quality of medical care. The automated data storage process will allow for more efficient exchange of information between medical institutions.
