Personal data of Kazakhstanis remains extremely vulnerable to leaks

It has recently become known that data on domestic flights of Kazakhstanis from 2007 to 2023 has leaked online, containing information on almost 700 thousand flights on Air Astana, Scat, Qazaq Air and Bek Air airlines within the country.

The database also contains information on international flights of Kazakhstan citizens on Russian airlines. The leaked files include passenger data, their document numbers, phone numbers and email addresses.‍

In total, access was gained to two databases: one with 3.4 billion records and the other with 664.5 million records.

The hackers behind the hack were Ukrainian hackers who targeted Russian companies Sirena-Travel with data on airline passengers and their insurance, as well as the Leonardo system.

This leak was ignored in Kazakhstan for a long time, until it became clear that the leaked databases contained data of our citizens, and even more - the personal data of many famous politicians, businessmen and show business stars.

Including Majilis deputies such as Albert Rau, Aidos Sarym, Murat Abenov and Zhiguli Dairabayev. Also in the database were Senator Bibigul Zheksenbai, blogger Alexey Lodochnikov and other famous Kazakhstanis.

Majilisman Abenov has already responded to the incident with his data. He said that he is not going to write a statement to the prosecutor's office because of the leak of his personal information. Instead, the deputy proposes to revise the law on the protection of personal data of Kazakhstanis.

The deputy said that he is not interested in how the leak from the Sirena-Travel system occurred:

"I am interested in the fact that Air Astana did not retain my data. It turns out that Air Astana or any other domestic airline stored my data. Why did they store it? And if they did, why didn’t they ensure its security?”

This incident once again proves how vulnerable personal data is, regardless of the position or social status of our citizens.

Our foundation has repeatedly spoken about the need for both the public and private sectors to ensure the safety and security of our citizens’ personal data.

As part of the recent Qazaqstan IGF forum, EDF founder Ruslan Daiyrbekov emphasized the importance of promptly responding to such incidents. It is also worth adding that such norms are already provided for in the existing legislation – they were developed taking into account successful foreign experience and implemented into the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
