Google has officially launched Advanced Protection in Android 16, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) highlights its benefits. This robust security mode is designed for high-risk users — journalists, human rights advocates, political activists — anyone needing bulletproof device protection.
Advanced Protection extends Google’s proven security suite and stands as a counterpart to Apple’s Lockdown Mode. It bundles best-in-class defenses: proactive threat blocking, encrypted connections, and strict app controls.
On activation, Google flips critical safeguards on instantly: anti-theft measures, enforced HTTPS for all Chrome traffic, advanced spam and scam filters in Google Messages, and complete disabling of insecure 2G networks.
The mode also locks down core protections — Google Play Protect and Android Safe Browsing — preventing their deactivation and dramatically boosting resilience to malware and phishing attacks.
New features include “Inactivity Reboot,” automatically restarting the device after 72 hours of inactivity to restore encryption and require PIN or biometric unlock. “USB Protection” restricts new USB connections to charge-only when locked, and auto-joining unsecured Wi-Fi is fully blocked.
EFF notes that these layers of defense synergize to minimize hacking risks and shut down vulnerable attack vectors.
Be aware that enabling Advanced Protection may alter everyday use: disabling Chrome’s JavaScript optimizer can break some websites; sideloading apps is blocked; and call-screening filters may misidentify legitimate calls.
Additional capabilities — detailed security logs and advanced network and USB restrictions — will roll out later this year. Support varies by manufacturer, with full feature sets currently on Google Pixel and select flagship Android devices.
EFF concludes: despite minor trade-offs, Google’s Advanced Protection delivers a significant leap in security for Android’s most vulnerable communities. Activate it if your privacy and data integrity are non-negotiable.
