The Eurasian Economic Commission is preparing a project to abolish roaming in the EAEU

By the end of 2024, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) will present a project that will outline a plan for regulating tariffs for mobile communications in international roaming between the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

It is planned that roaming will be abolished in the first quarter of 2025, and the discussion of the initiative itself began in 2023. This was seen as a step towards deepening the interaction of the EAEU states and facilitating communication between citizens and businesses within the union.

The commission is currently developing rules for the use of fair tariffs for cellular services in international roaming in the territories of the EAEU member states, said Sergei Maksimov, Director of the Antimonopoly Regulation Department of the EEC:

“They will determine the tariff step, the volume of communication services provided and other aspects of the interaction of communication operators of the member states. By the end of this year, the draft rules should be submitted for approval to the commission board.”

Earlier, Russia planned to cancel cellular roaming with the EAEU member countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia by 2025.

At the same time, Kazakhstani telecom operators opposed such cancellation. The companies' position was voiced and supported by the International Center for Information Technologies and Awareness-raising in May of this year, "since this does not bring commercial interest to them, they lose their income."
