EDF expert: Alternative Internet cable is an important stage of Kazakhstan's digital sovereignty

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev delivered his annual address to the nation, where he voiced, among other things, theses concerning the technological and digital development of the country.

According to the head of state, it is necessary to strengthen the results achieved in the field of digitalization, introduce AI into the "electronic government" platform, launch the National Center for Artificial Intelligence, continue work to improve the regulatory framework for digital assets and mining, and further develop crypto exchanges. It is also necessary to introduce the basics of financial literacy and digital hygiene in schools and universities.

Separately, the president touched upon the topic of laying a fiber-optic communication line across the Caspian Sea. According to him, the project is planned to be completed in 2025:

"This is extremely important for our country in terms of creating a digital infrastructure associated with international corridors and cross-border data flows. In general, we need to continue the active development of telecommunications networks, data centers, implement global cybersecurity standards, and improve the competencies of our specialists."

According to the head of legal practice at the Eurasian Digital Foundation, Yelzhan Kabyshev, the completion of the construction of an alternative Internet overpass is an important stage for the digital sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The expert noted that in the event of "emergency" situations in the operation of Internet cables from the Russian Federation, Kazakhstani users will be able to freely use the network:

"With the new trunk cable, Kazakhstan will become the guarantor of stable Internet for all Central Asian countries."

Yelzhan Kabyshev added that the new trunk cable to Kazakhstan runs from Europe along the bottom of the Black Sea, and then passes through Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Recall that recently in Kazakhstan, problems were recorded in the operation of popular messengers Telegram and WhatsApp, which coincided with an attempt to block them in Russia.

IT experts attribute this to the fact that Internet traffic to Kazakhstan goes through the Russian Federation, so many of the problems our neighbors have may also manifest themselves here. So an alternative source of communication between Kazakhstan and the World Wide Web should be the optimal solution to such issues.
