The government of Kazakhstan, in agreement with the UN, has decided to establish a Regional Center for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Almaty. The state will allocate $3 million for its creation and operation.

The Center’s main mission is to coordinate projects and initiatives related to achieving the SDGs in Central Asia. It will serve as a platform for experience exchange, joint program development, and progress monitoring.

Officials emphasize that the opening of the Center will strengthen Kazakhstan’s role as a regional hub for sustainable development and digitalization. Almaty was chosen as the venue due to its positioning as a site for international initiatives.

The Center will focus on poverty reduction, education and healthcare development, sustainable management of natural resources, and digital transformation for society. Special attention will be given to equality, inclusion, and support for vulnerable groups.

An important context is the annual Qazaqstan IGF — the National Internet Governance Forum, organized by the Eurasian Digital Foundation. The forum links digitalization with SDGs 9 (Industry, Innovation), 16 (Peace, Justice, Institutions), and 17 (Partnerships).

Key aspects include:

  • Digital inclusiveness: reliable internet access for all regions, including rural areas.

  • Responsible digital economy: regulation of digital assets and data protection.

  • Sustainable IT infrastructure: secure data centers and reduced carbon footprint.

  • Human rights online: legal digital environment for youth and vulnerable groups.

Thus, the UN Regional Center in Almaty and IGF development form a unified strategy: sustainable development and digitalization become interconnected priorities for Kazakhstan.
